Bread can come in diverse flavors, types and dimensions. However, they are typically all the same. You have to know more about the different kinds to learn the many ways of making them. The more you recognize the features and characteristics of dough, the better the quality of your products. Discover more about bread and see how much more you can add to create your own special taste and design.

What is Bread?

Bread is a basic food prepared by cooking water and dough of flour and potentially other ingredients. Doughs are generally baked in the Western world and several other countries. In other cuisines, bread is fried, steamed or baked on a hot skillet. It can be unleavened or leavened too.

Salt, leavening agents and fat like baking soda and yeast are basic ingredients. Bread may also have other ingredients like egg, sugar, milk, spice, fruit like raisins, nuts like walnuts, vegetables like onion and seeds like poppy seeds. Bread is among the oldest prepared foods in the world, dating back hundreds of years. Leavened bread can also be traced back to prehistoric periods.

More About Bread

Fresh bread is acquired for its quality, aroma, taste and texture. It is important to maintain its freshness to keep the food appetizing. Bread that has dried or stiffened past its ideal state is known to be stale. Recent bread is usually wrapped in plastic or paper film. It may also be stored in a container like a breadbox to keep it from drying. Bread kept in moist and warm environments is prone to mold growth. Bread that is kept at low temperatures like being placed inside a refrigerator can grow molds slower compared to bread kept at room temperature. This will turn stale immediately because of retrogradation.

The crumb is described by culinary experts and bakers as the soft inside part of the bread. This should not be mistaken with small pieces of bread that usually fall off called crumbs. The outside hard part of the bread is known as the crust.

Serving Bread

Bread can be served regardless of temperature. As soon as it is baked, it can eventually be toasted. Bread is usually eaten using your hands or a knife and fork. It can be eaten independently or together with other food and sauces like gravy, olive oil and sardines. It is also best served as a sandwich with cheese, vegetables or meat contained in between.

About the Crust

The crust of the bread is created from exposed dough during the cooking procedure. It is browned and hardened from caramelization of the proteins and sugars using the intense heat at the surface of the bread. The nature of the bread crust is different, based on the kind of bread and the manner of baking. Commercial bread is baked using jets the steam towards the bread directly to make a nice crust. Some bread crusts are unpalatable, especially among children. Crusts always have a different color compared to the rest of the bread.

In the past few years giving a gift basket has increased in popularity. They used to be something you put together yourself when you wanted a present that was unique and that gave to the recipient in a variety of ways. But nowadays the internet has so many options for baskets that are already put together for you. Let's take a look at why gift baskets are such a great idea when you are looking to present someone with something special.

A quick internet search will show you that for as many occasions as you can think of, there is a gift basket available to suit your needs. Mother's Day, birthdays, the birth of a new baby, or for someone who is retiring - a gift basket can be found to suit the event.

The idea has caught on for several reasons; one being that you can give a basket to someone who is difficult to buy for because of the uniqueness of the ingredients. There is truly something for everyone here. From soup to nuts (literally!), there is an endless variety of things that can be included in the basket, making it the ideal choice when you just can't find that perfect, single gift.

And no more traveling around from store to store and then just buying a present that you really aren't happy with because you couldn't find anything else. Gift baskets have something to please every recipient, and ingredients that you will be happy to give to your friends and relatives.

They can be geared towards a hobby, an event, or a lifestyle. They can be romantic in nature, filled with cooking gadgets for that budding gourmet cook, or even loaded up with "gag" gifts for a laugh when your friend or relative receives it.

Delivery of these baskets is available from almost any corner of our world. And this opens up so many more opportunities to give that special present. Fine wines from Italy, cheeses from France or Denmark, or luxury chocolates from Belgium are all ingredients that can be found in the baskets. Web pages are full of endless choices from the exotic to something from your hometown, and you can now make these choices and do you shopping without ever having to leave home.

These baskets are put together professionally in a very attractive way. This is one thing that really catches a person's eye, both from the giving end and the receiving one. Trying to arrange all of these items at home is not easy. Now it is all done for you. So the tedious shopping is eliminated along with the wrapping of the gift. When your basket if presented, the items will all be in view, arranged in such a way as to make them very appealing and attractive.

One thing about these baskets is that if you cannot make it to a happening or an event, sending a gift basket is almost like the recipient having you there "in spirit". Choosing to send one lets the receiver know that you were thinking about him or her in a special way. And it gives the person a feeling that you are still sharing in their celebration.

And did we mention that these baskets can also be a wonderful gift for a group of people? A collection of coffees, teas, snack items or soups can be shared by an office or a club, making a gift basket a great idea for giving as thank-you gifts to an attorney's office, doctors or nurses who have helped you through hard times or several teachers in a school who have shown your child special attention.

Last but not least, on very special feature about these gifts is simply that they come in such wonderful containers. Although called a "gift basket", it may not be packaged in a basket at all. For a horse enthusiast, the items may be arranged in a pail for the barn. A cooking "basket" may be housed in a pretty mixing bowl. And a gardeners package may arrive in a tool bin made for holding gardening tools. These "baskets" are still capable of being used, even when the items on the inside are taken out; making a gift "basket" truly a gift that continues to give.

Sit in the comfort of your own home and browse through the endless options of gift baskets that are available. You will be giving a gift that is as unique as the person receiving it!

There's nothing more enjoyable than having friends and family gathered around amidst the wonderful smells of charcoal-grilled prawns, vegetables and selected favorites. Barbecuing is one of those time- honored rituals that go hand in hand with summertime. Whether you're in your backyard or at you're favorite camping site, barbecuing is a pleasure to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Barbecuing has never been more exciting; with the endless designs of barbecues available and the myriad of barbecue cookbooks and cooking shows it really does take barbecuing into a whole new realm. With recipes for everything from grilled bananas to peaches and dry rubs for ribs, barbecues aren't just for cooking steaks and burgers anymore. With all the available barbecuing options it helps to know a few of the barbecuing terms and barbecuing utensils that are used.

Firstly, barbecues come in a wide variety of options; there are propane, natural gas and the standard barbecues for use with charcoal. Barbecues can come with range style one, two and four burner options along with rotisseries. There are even barbecues that have coolers built right into the bottom! Barbecuing has never been quite so convenient.

When you're using your barbecue it really helps to have the right utensils and barbeque accessories, this will make your barbecuing experience easier and more enjoyable. Long handled tongs, basting brushes and spatulas are quite helpful. Heavy -duty oven mitts can also be useful. Of course you don't want to forget the proper wire brushes and scrubbers (crumpled foil even works well) to remove build-up, keeping your grill racks clean.

Foods that are tender such as fish, vegetables and some burgers can benefit from cooking in a special grill basket (this way you aren't loosing any of your meal into the barbecue). There are also special racks available to be used with corn, potatoes, ribs and meat.

An excellent barbecue accessory is the grill wok, with this you can make you're favorite stir fries and vegetable dishes; the wok has small holes throughout that allow heat and smoke to penetrate the food. Another great grill accessory is the grill pizza tray used mostly for grilled pizza. Other grill accessories include; ( http://www.best-bbq-online.com/grill-accessories.htm ) the grill topper used for fish and vegetables providing an even cooking surface, which prevents foods from falling through the grill rack; you can never have too many skewers in assorted lengths which can be used with a skewer rack for grilling your favorite marinated vegetables and meats; smoker boxes for gas grills filled with soaked wood chips add a wonderful smoked flavor to foods. Lastly foil packets are available or simple tin foil to wrap foods, just remember that you may be sacrificing the grill and smoke flavors when foods are wrapped tightly.

After you have the utensils and proper grilling accessories needed for you're barbeque experience you'll want to familiarize yourself on the different types of grilling processes and terms to find the ones that work best for you and to know exactly what has to be done. To start, basting is probably the most familiar of barbecuing terms, a simple brushing with a seasoned liquid adding both flavor and moisture to the food. A brochette is just French for a kabob, or simply food cooked on a skewer. A glaze is a glossy, flavorful coating on food as it cooks as a result of regular basting.

Three very popular methods of barbecuing are the direct grilling, dry smoking and indirect grilling methods. Direct grilling is probably the most popular grilling used, it is when food is placed directly over the flame. It is a fast method because of the intense heat and allows for browning on the outside of foods. This process works best for food requiring short cooking times such as burgers and steaks, you must remember to turn food over to allow cooking on both sides. The dry smoking method is achieved by placing a grill rack indirectly over the heat source with the barbecue lid down, this allows the flame to burn thus creating smoke which covers the food, giving you a smoky flavor. Lastly the indirect grilling is a slow process of cooking because of less heat, it is done by surrounding a drip pan with the coals and putting the food over the pan, so the hot air circulates around the food (similar to a convection oven). It is wise to check with your barbecue owner manual for indirect grilling specific to your barbecue, roasts work well with this method.

After you acquired the barbecue and all the necessary cooking utensils and accessories you're ready for the best part of barbecuing and that is the cooking of the food. Sauces, marinades and rubs are popular cooking ideas when barbecuing. The sauce can be said to define a great barbecue. Whether you use a little or a lot is a matter of preference. A sauce often includes sugar, honey or preserves, which can cause the sauce to burn when cooking; a suggestion is to brush your sauce on in the last five to ten minutes of cooking. There are a wide variety of sauces and glazes to be made ranging from apple butter barbecue sauce to raspberry piquant sauce.

Marinades are used for soaking your choice of meat, tofu or vegetables. ( http://www.best-bbq-online.com/marinades.htm ) The marinating both tenderizes and permeates the food with flavor, adding flavor and promoting crisp brown exteriors, changing an otherwise average dinner into a great one. Marinades are virtually fool proof and can be made in advance refrigerated in an airtight container for up to a week. The three basic ingredients in a marinade are; flavorings such as herbs, spices, sweeteners; oils which keep the food pliable and give a crispy crust; acids such as citrus juices, wines, vinegars and yogurts used to balance the sweetness. It is suggested to use the acids sparingly on fish and poultry, as they will soften the flesh when used.

A virtually fat free and easy way to add flavor to food is by using a variety of bold seasonings in a rub. The food is rubbed with spices prior to grilling, the rub transforms into a crunchy brown crust that seals in the juices and enhances the flavors of the food. The spices should be generously applied coating the entire surface of the food; the food should then be covered and put in the fridge for 15 minutes to 2 hours. Simplicity is the key for making rubs, salt and sugar are two of the main ingredients and the rest are up to you.

Whatever your barbecuing specialty might be barbecues can be both a fun and convenient way to make dinner. Summertime needn't be the only time of year that you're barbecuing, if weather allows you can barbecue all year round. The options have never been more exciting, and the variety of foods and recipes never more abundant.

Gift basket ideas are great! No other gifts are as much fun to put together or as much to receive. Their versatility make them an enviable choice for any gift giver because you can make them any theme you want to!

When you personalize your gift as much as that, you let the recipient know how much you care. Whether you have a wine enthusiast, a crafter or a spa lover on your mind, there are so many creative ways to make the perfect gift. Putting all those ideas into a basket creates a myriad of delightful treasures for them to find when they open it.

For instance, if you are putting together a beading supply basket, you can put anything in there from a beginner beading book to jewelry findings and even a small assortment of beads to work with. For the scrap booking fanatic, you can add stamps, special papers, artistic scissors, and stickers. You are limited only by your imagination and the more unique you make it, the more special your recipient feels.

If you have a certain idea for a gift basket, but have no idea how to do it, search online. It's more likely that someone else has looked up that information and/or posted it online for others to read. By looking up a certain topic, you may be able to get ideas on things you can make yourself, if you can't afford to buy retail basket additions.

You can also choose to do a luxury basket, such as a homemade spa treatment. With things like facial masks, exfoliating scrubs, bath drops, body oil, and a candle, you can set anyone up for a night of relaxation that will make them feel refreshed and happy. You can even do a daytime relaxation theme with a gift card for their favorite coffee stand, a good book and maybe a really soft lap blanket.

The men in our lives may not advertise it, but they love to be pampered just as much. Give them massage certificate, gift cards for their favorite drinks or nutritional shakes, their favorite body wash or even a hand or foot warmer for while they're at work. Tools and sports memorabilia are not your only options and many guys love the variety that a gift basket offers.

Don't limit yourself to regular, normal gift basket ideas. The more unique you are in your gift-giving, the more they will remember receiving the gift. And it always makes them feel more appreciated when they see that you have fitted it to their personal tastes. No doubt it will come back to you in the form of a great gift basket on your birthday or special day!

Chocolate Is Not Necessarily Unhealthy

What is it about chocolate that make it so irresistible? We eat for any reason; as a treat to reward ourselves, to lift us when we are down or in our favourite desserts. It ticks al the boxes, but we also know that we shouldn't eat the amount that we do, unless it was healthy chocolate of course.

Well you probably didn't know this but there is, and it still contains the good stuff such as the minerals and antioxidants. It doesn't however, have all the bad stuff in it.

This is dark chocolate, which is basically chocolate without all the fattening ingredients such as milk solids and cocoa butter and a bucket load of sugar! There is a low fat, bitter chocolate which is even better for you, but there's one thing that you should know.

Our bodies do not recognize chocolate as food, weird huh? Eat a bar of chocolate on its own and your body will pick up on the sugar etc and just store it, and the minerals and vitamins won't be absorbed.

So for your body to properly absorb the healthier properties you have to eat with something else. This is where dark chocolate with fruit and nuts added is so good. You get the minerals, vitamins and antioxidants as well as the goodness from the fruit and the nuts.

The ideal accompaniment to chocolate is fruit rich in vitamin C, as it works to form a nutritional balance to make sure that the iron from the chocolate gets absorbed and not dispelled. What you end up with is probably the tastiest multivitamin supplement you'll ever have!

I used to work as a chocolatier, so you can imagine how much chocolate I used to eat! As I ate dark chocolate complimented with strawberries, blueberries, nuts etc I never put any weight on. A blood test also proved that I had the optimum level of minerals and vitamins in my system.

So you now know which chocolate to eat if you can't do without it. Forget the fat laden milk chocolate bars and reach for a dark chocolate with fruit and nuts and enjoy your treat without the guilt.

One last thing, just because you know it's healthier doesn't mean you can pig out, be sensible!

How many of us don't finish our main courses to ensure that we leave enough room for dessert? I certainly do. A meal to me just doesn't seem complete with out something sweet at the end of it.

I consider myself a bit of a dessert connoisseur; having eaten so many of them in the past. I eat them hot or cold, so here are a few suggestions for desserts you may like to try.

There are some classic desserts here; along with others you may have heard of but haven't yet tried. If you don't eat out often, some of these are very easy to create yourself.

One of my all time favorites which will always have a place on my dessert resume is the classic mousse made from white chocolate. Those to tend to stick to a traditional chocolate mousse are more often than not pleasantly surprised when they try this version.

Be a bit more adventurous with your chocolate mousse next time you make it. Most of us like summer fruits like Raspberries, so why not drizzle some into the mousse to give the chocolate a bit of fruitiness.

If you think along the same lines like me and want your dessert to look great, you can create wonderful cocktail from ingredients like ice cream using a martini glass.

These look amazing at a dinner party. Your guests won't take any notice of how simple the recipe is; they will be blown away by the presentation. Put in other stuff like fruit and trimmings to really impress.

This final one really shows off your artistic flair. Cut a mango so it looks like a rose and fill it with ice cream, simple yet stunning. There are many instructional videos online to show you how easy it is.

If you are a mango fan you will love this, and the combination of the mango flavor with either sorbet or ice cream is sublime.
